I think motivation is going to be a huge factor here and wanted to get some discussion on the topic. 4 straight weeks of golf has some people tired and may be looking to get off the circuit..asap.

Those that will definetly be motivated

1. Woods, brings his A game everytime
2. Mickelson

I also think you may get a good weekend out of those that snuck in the top 30 with some good performances this weekend.

Hopefully we can find some winners this weekend.

The greens are in such bad shape, officials said, that no one will be able to set foot on them until the first round on Thursday.

LEMONT, Ill. (AP) -- Not having Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson at all the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup no longer seems like a big problem compared to the situation next week at East Lake, which doesn't have grass.

Record heat over the last month in Atlanta has caused so much damage to the greens at East Lake that PGA TOUR officials canceled the pro-am at the TOUR Championship and told players they would not be able to set foot on the greens until the first round Thursday.
It was an unprecedented move to essentially eliminate practice before one of the TOUR's showcase event, and it could spoil the finale of a FedExCup competition that so far has produced riveting golf.

"They don't need this to be an issue," Geoff Ogilvy said. "It's a shame."
TOUR officials posted a two-page notice on everyone's locker Sunday morning at the BMW Championship, where the top 30 in the playoff standings will advance to East Lake for the TOUR Championship.

"All greens were impacted to varying degrees, and several greens are and will remain in poor conditions through the tournament," it said.
Players will be allowed to hit tee shots on every hole but the par 3s, and second shots only on the par 5s, as long as they don't reach the green. The notice specifically said players and their caddies could not walk on the greens, putt on them or hit any shots to them.
The practice area will remain open.

The TOUR said Atlanta reported record temperatures of 90-plus degrees for 28 days in Augusta, including 10 straight days at 100 degrees or higher. The area also went without rain for 25 straight days, and the combination proved lethal to the greens.

"In two weeks, we went from very, very good to very, very bad," said Henry Hughes, chief of operations for the PGA TOUR.

It likely would be one more layer of distractions for the FedExCup, which concludes with four straight tournaments through the TOUR Championship. Whoever has the most points wins a $10 million bonus, the largest single prize in sports.

The format has been criticized in recent weeks when all the top players didn't show. Woods skipped the first playoff event in New York, and Mickelson decided to stay home from the BMW Championship. There also has been grumbling about the $10 million prize being deferred compensation.

The golf has been some of the best of the year, with Steve Stricker winning in New York and Mickelson going head-to-head with Woods for three days when he won outside Boston.

It culminates at East Lake with the TOUR Championship, where even the ever-optimistic TOUR is painting an ugly picture.
Players began hearing about potential problems at East Lake days ago, and most were stunned to find out they won't be able to play the course until Thursday.

"I've never heard of anything like that before," Woods said. "Certainly in my years on TOUR and my years in amateur golf and junior golf, I've never heard of it being canceled with good weather. This will be interesting to see."
Just because the pro-am has been called off doesn't mean the players can go home to catch their breath.

They are obligated to be at East Lake on Wednesday for what amounts to a substitute pro-am, in which players will take part in a Q&A, conduct clinics on the practice range and have lunch with their amateurs.

The TOUR's agronomy staff has been at East Lake the last three weeks trying to restore the greens, and with slight cooler weather in the forecast, officials hope the greens can at least be reasonable for the TOUR Championship.

"But the overall conditions of all the greens will not come close to normal expectations," the TOUR notice said.
Ogilvy found it a coincidence that the East Lake greens were in such bad shape because "that's the best part about that course."
Other players felt as though the TOUR should have abandoned East

Lake when they realized there was a problem, moving the tournament to another course in the Atlanta area. Hughes said they would have had only three weeks to find another course to hold the tournament, which he said was not enough time. Plus, he said officials remained hopeful they could fix the East Lake greens.

Some players who make the 30-man field, such as Woody Austin and Hunter Mahan, have never played a tournament at East Lake. Boo Weekley said he has been there about 10 times and tried to qualify for the U.S. Open one year at East Lake.

"It's part of golf, man," Weekley said. "You can't help the weather."

As for the FedEx Cup, he's right where most people figured he would be.

Despite skipping the first tournament in the playoffs, Woods had a 3,133-point lead over Stricker, who finished third at the BMW Championship, and a 4,120-point lead over Mickelson, who decided to skip Chicago after winning in Boston.

So it comes down to this at East Lake for the Tour Championship:

_ A victory by Woods clinches the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize.

_ Stricker can win the FedEx Cup by winning at East Lake, which would be his second victory in these playoffs.

_ Mickelson could capture the cup if he wins the Tour Championship and Woods finishes lower than second alone.

_ Rory Sabbatini (No.4) and K.J. Choi (No. 5) have to win the Tour Championship and hope that Woods finishes out of the top 15, something the world's No. 1 player hasn't done since the Memorial in early June.

looking at cink over rollins for 1st round

-rollins downward trend, cink upward trend the past few tourneys

also looking at clark over singh for the tourney

-clark is a bit fresher as he missed most of the beginning of the tour this season with an injury, he's healthy now and coming off a solid week.

from Rollins blog.....this was before this past tourney

I just haven't been hitting my irons that great lately. The last couple of days they've shown some signs of coming back to what I like to see, though. My distances have been a little bit off but the biggest thing is that I haven't hit the ball close enough. A good shot is 25 away whereas before, a good shot would be inside 10 or 15 feet over and over again. You maybe do that 10, 11 times a round and that's how you shoot the low number. If I can do that and get the putts to fall, then I can go low. But I've just got to stay patient with it and let it come back to me.

My teacher, Todd Anderson, was out last week and he'll be in Atlanta, too. I think the biggest thing we've noticed is that lately my tendency is to be short and right. That happens when my left side comes up and out of the shot. So I'm just trying to really concentrate on keeping my left side in the shot longer and rotating more on the ball to compress it and get the distance I'm accustomed to having. When I do that, I hit good shots. So it's just a matter of hitting enough balls and getting that feel ingrained again so that I don't have to think about it. You want to be able to kind of set up, point and shoot. Here lately, I haven't been able to do that but we're battling through it. So maybe this week, I'll get it back again. I feel like I've hit the ball more solid than I have the last couple of months,

May be fading Rollins a lot...looking at Calvecchia who despite two horrendous weeks should bounce back at a course he knows well.

His past two weeks were the first time he's played at those courses...he also has a much better attitude to this week than most PGA players

only thing holding me back is his age and he's obviously tired

I'll see what 5dimes offers in Rollins matchups before i committ

locking in play #1

1) Clark (-110) over VJ Singh for the tournament

-Clark playing well as of late (2nd, 2nd, 6th, 5th, and 7th) in the last 7 tourneys.

-Singh is horrible lately (56, cut, cut, 60, and 64) since finishing 2nd in late July.

will add more plays later, trying to put down information in this thread

one has to wonder if Choi is healthy, after running up finish in the 1st playoff tourney..he withdrew then a lackluster 38th

After missing the Deutsche Bank tournament, Choi needed a strong performance at the BMW Championship in Chicago, which was held at the Cog Hill golf course where he'd never finished better than 30th in his PGA career. Choi's struggles at the course continued as he ended that tournament in 38th place and now faces long odds in contending for the FedEx Cup.

To win the playoff series, Choi will need to win the Tour Championship and hope that Woods finishes out of the top 15, something he hadn't done since the Memorial in early June.

Choi's nagging back pain, stemming from an injury sustained in March while playing with his children, is a concern. If his poor showing at the BMW is any indication, Choi doesn't seem to have found his form even after taking a few days off by pulling out of Deutsche Bank.

Play #2 Sabbatin (-115) over Choi (for the tournament)

Played at WSEX

-I don't have faith in Choi being healthy as he got worse at the tourney progressed this past week, was lights out before the injury
-Sabbatini minus the majors has been pretty damn solid on the tour this year

have to wonder if choi is only in it (and played last week) because he has an outside chance at the point championship

One more bet single pop

Ogilvy (-110) over Baddley (1st round only)

Number of reasons

-Baddley possibly comes out flat after being in the mix Sunday
-Baddley has never played course before...flew to arizona monday to rest for a few days, then to atlanta....that is chicago, to arizona, to atlanta..lot of travel
-Ogilvy recovered from a 78 and 73 to shoot 68 and 69 to end the weekend
-Greens being damaged not ideal for Baddley (see below..ripped off of another site)

but it is likely to work against ace putters like Aaron Baddeley, who stands only 173rd on the greens-in-regulation league table. He got it up and down from all over the place for a superb second place in Chicago on Sunday but that course is much more forgiving.

As he is also way outside the top 100 in driving accuracy, it is going to be hard for the Aussie and players like him to make up the ground on wretched greens.

Thanks for the picks. Seems like you're doing pretty well in golf this year.

What book has Ogilvy v. Baddelly for 1st round only? I'm only seeing that matchup for the entire tournament, when offered.

Also, you've posted rationales for fading Singh and Choi, while being comfortable using Ogilvy. Given that, what do you think about Ogilvy over Singh and Choi for the tournament?

5 dimes has it

and it's basically a fade against baddelly who hasn't played on the course yet without much practice time here and the greens not favoring him

i don't think ogilvy is strong enough for the other two bets...or at least i like clark and sabbatini much more
